Sacrifice to the Five Mounts has a long-termhistory since Emperors Yao and Shun offered sacrifices to heaven and earth inChina. From the first year of the Shenjuereign of the Emperor Xuan in the Han Dynasty (B.C. 61), sacrifice to selectedmountains and rivers had become a customization.
Beiyue Temple is located in Quyang County. It was built at the Jingming-Zhengshi reign of Emperor Xuanwu in theBeiwei Dynasty of the South-North Dynasties. It has been repaired and maintained since the TangDynasty to the Republication era. It was the place where feudal emperorsworship ancient Mt. Hengshan.The Temple covers 174, 000 square meters in totalwith a floor area of 4,200 square meters. Facing south, it is shaped as aChinese character of 田. It is well-known for frescoes,inscriptions, and historical architecture. The Dening Hall is the main body ofBeiyue Temple, which is the existing largest wooden building from the Yuan Dynasty.It is also the official worship place with the highest level, presenting allarchitectural, mural and inscriptional achievements. . Beiyue Temple, among the second group, was grantedby the State Council the National Major Cultural Relics Protection Unit in1982, and was rated as a 4ATourist Attraction by the National Tourism Administration in 2010.
The museum is located in the west of theTemple,covering an area of 1,800 square meters with a floor area of 730 squaremeters.In order to display the natural and cultural landscapes,as well as thebuilding,frescoes and inscriptions,the museum has been equipped with varioushi-tech facilities.And hence,visitors could be able to have a vividly intuitiveunderstanding of the origin,development and key contents of the Beiyue culture.
